How often do we get 315 Waxwings in one shot? These were near the Yew Tree in Norton (G. Evans).

How many are in the area?

Chasewater:  Smew in Fly Bay, 19 Common Snipe and 4 Jack Snipe (GR).  22 Waxwings flew north along west shore during late afternoon (BS).
Fly Pool – Kingfisher, Great Crested Grebe still on nest (GR).
Swag – 2:15 pm 175 + Tufted, 52 Goldeneye, 10 Wigeon, 18 Pochard, 1 Goosander, 2 Ruddys (SB).
11.15 am 200+ Waxwings nr Silver Court, Brownhills plus around 150 near The Turf on the A5 (SB)

Its been raining Waxwings!
140 (flocks of 80, 25 and 30) flew north along the west shore between 15:45 and 16:20 (GC, KC, ICW, MY) and 40 fed on hawthorn near the A5 end of Pool Road during the day (PJ).
Also about 340 in Brownhills, 240 at Brownhills West and 315 at Norton Canes (GE, PH, NS, PW)
Chasewater:  1 adult Yellow-legged Gull(GC, KC)Swag - 1 male Smew, 90+ Goldeneye, 2 Kingfishers, 10 Goosanders, 7 Ruddy Ducks (SB, GC, KC, GE).
20 Common Snipe, 2 Jack Snipe (ICW, MY)

Chasewater:  1 first-winter Glaucous Gull, 1 male Smew (SB, PJ, IW). 1 Turnstone, 275 Waxwings around the Pear Tree Cottage Inn(PJ).
Highfield Farm – 2 Tree Sparrows, 9 Teal.
(80 Waxwings at Brownhills High Street have been present for several days)

The first-winter Glaucous Gull was seen loafing in the fields at Little Wyrley but apparently did not turn up at the roost (EGP).

Fly Creek (Bay) – 4 Goosanders, Ruddy Duck, 2 Kingfishers (IP).
Cuckoo Bank: 5 Short-eared Owls, 1 Stonechat, Grey Wagtail, 11 Red Deer (JH).

Chasewater:  1 Glaucous Gull (SB), 1 adult Iceland Gull (WMBC) or is this yesterday’s bird? 1 male Smew, 1 Jackdaw, 20 Meadow Pipits (GW)
1 Muntjac (DG).

No Man’s Bank
– 38 Red Deer (DG).

Cuckoo Bank: 
3 Short-eared Owls, 8 Grey Partridge, 2 Pheasants (GR).

Can we have some discussion on the Forum about the White-winged adult Herring/Iceland Gull?

Chasewater:  1 male Smew, 35 Waxwings (by the Pear Tree pub) (WMBC), 1 first winter Glaucous Gull (a new very pale bird),  1 Herring Gull with white primaries! (PJ, IW), 4 Woodcocks, 3 Jack Snipe, 4 Common Snipe (GW).
Cuckoo Bank:  
1 Short-eared Owl (WMBC).

Chasewater: I male Smew (MY), 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull, 13 000 Black-headed Gulls, 25 Common Gulls, 2 Buzzards, 6 Ruddy Ducks, 11 Wigeon, 3 Teal, 8 Goosanders, 14 Cormorants, 1 Stonechat, 2 Grey Wagtails (GE), 62 Pochard, 84 Goldeneye, 300+ Tufted Ducks (SB).

Cuckoo Bank: 1 Short-eared Owl, 4 Stonechats, 15 Meadow Pipits, 3 Commom Snipe(NS), flock of Goldfinches (BM).

1 first-winter Glaucous Gull, 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull, 1048 Herring Gulls, 226 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 197 Great Black-backed Gulls, 14000 Black-headed Gulls, 25 Common Gulls (SB, GE, IW).
11 Goosanders, 23 Ruddy Ducks, 5 Common Snipe, 1 Jack Snipe, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Stonechat, 15 Long-tailed Tits (SB), 6 Shovelers, 111 Canada Geese, 40 Lapwings, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker (GE)

Feeding Station
– 3 Willow Tits, 7 Bullfinches
(SB),

Cuckoo Bank:  2 Short-eared Owls (BG), 2 Stonechat, 7 Common Snipe, 1 Sparrowhawk , Great Spotted Woodpecker in birch wood(JH).

Chasewater: 29 Red Deer close to Norton Bog (SB). No ‘white-winged’ gulls in roost ( PJ, IW)
Cuckoo Bank: 1 Common Buzzard (SB)

Roost:  290 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (several probably intermedius) (GE).
Swag – 58 Pochard, 4 Wigeon (SB).

Chasewater:  A flock of 38 Waxwings roamed between the Yew Tree pub in Norton Canes and the Pear Tree pub in Brownhills West, at one time flying over the Railway Heritage Centre (GE). (The huge flock was still present at Boney Hay (PW)).
4 Little Grebes, 6 Ruddy, 314 Tufted, 42 Pochard, 5 Shovelers, 11 Wigeon, 10 Goosanders and 79 Goldeneye.
Roost - 12000 Black-headed Gulls but no sign of the Glaucous (GE).
Cuckoo Bank:  1 Buzzard, 6 Stonechat - 3 pairs (GR)

Chasewater:  1 first-winter Glaucous Gull (SB, GE, SH, IW), 83 Goldeneye, 2 Shelduck, 1 Kingfisher.
Highfield Farm – 9 Teal, 1 Common Snipe, 30 Fieldfares, 30 Redwings, 20 Greenfinches, 12 Stock Doves (GE). (210 Waxwings at Boney Hay (GE, BS, PW)).   
Cuckoo Bank:  4 Short-eared Owls, 1 Stonechat, 1 Kestrel (N).
No Man’s Bank – 21 Red Deer (GE).

Highfield Farm – 9 Teal, 1 Common Snipe, mixed flock of Redwings and Fieldfares (SB).
Cuckoo Bank:
1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Stonechats and a mixed flock of about 70 Fieldfares and Redwings (GR). (40 Waxwings one mile from our recording area at Boney Hay GR, PW)

Cuckoo Bank:  2 SE Owls, 2 Stonechats, 4 Grey Herons, 7 teal, 1 Snipe, 3 kestrels, 50 Skylarks, 16 Red Deer (GR).

Chasewater: 30-35 Waxwings flew over south shore towards Brownhills West at 09:45,  (6 seen later at Coppiceside, Brownhills), 7 Goosanders(AF). 
2 first-winter Glaucous Gulls (GE, JB et al) 295 Great Black-backed Gulls, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Grey Herons, 6 Cormorants, 15 Stock Doves, 40 Fieldfares, 30 Redwings, 7 Teal (GE)
2 SE Owls, 2 Cuckoo Bank:  2 SE Owls, 2 Pheasant, 13 Grey Partridges, 3 Kestrels, 30 Goldfinch, 25 Fieldfare, 40 Yellowhammers, 1 Grey Heron (GR).

Chasewater: 2 first-winter Glaucous Gulls, 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull(JA, KC, GE, PJ), 70 Goldeneye, 15 Stock Doves(GE), 5 Ruddy Ducks, 5 Common Snipe, 1 Kingfisher, pair of Great Crested Grebes nest building on Fly Pool (GR).

Feeding Station - 14 Bullfinches (GR).er

Cuckoo Bank:
3 Short-eared Owls from 4pm on, 1 Red legged Partridge, 2 Pheasants (1 very dark bird, but not a Black Grouse!), 7 Linnets (GW).

Cuckoo Bank: 
I Short-eared Owl, 1 Jack Snipe (GW). 50 Goldfinches, a male and female Stonechat in the gorse, a Buzzard struggling with the wind, a couple of Pheasants, a Heron, a Kestrel and 17 red deer (N).

Cuckoo Bank: 3 Short-eared Owls, 2 Common Snipe, 1 Kestrel (GE). 15 Red Deer

Cuckoo Bank: 1 Kestrel, 4 Red Deer, 1 Treecreeper in Eights wood (TH). 1 Woodcock (per AM)
Chasewater:  61 Lapwings, 6 Cormorants, 9 Teal, 5 Wigeon, 7 Ruddy Ducks, 5 Stock Doves
Gull Roost
greatly reduced from end of year to 17 Great Black-backs, 115 Herring Gulls, 80 Lesser Black-backs, 8000 Black-headed and 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull (GE).

3 Common Snipe, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher and a Great Crested Grebe taking a perch on the Slurry pool (SB).

Cuckoo Bank:  1 Peregrine (GW), 1 Short-eared Owl,  20+ Red Deer on Cuckoo Bank and 10+ on No Man’s Bank (GE). 5 Stonechats (2 male), 23 Yellowhammers, 2 Siskin, 15 Redpoll, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 GS Woodpecker, 2 Grey Partridge, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Sparrowhawk (fem), 2 Kestrels (IW).
Chasewater:
75 Pochard, 8 Cormorants, 8 Goosanders, 8 Wigeon, 4 Teal, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Kestrel, 10 Common Gulls (GE).

Chasewater:  4 Jack Snipe, 15 Common Snipe, 1 Woodcock, 90 Goldeneye, 6 Goosanders (GE).  1st W Iceland Gull reported from The Swag at 1300 and flew towards the main pool, Kingfisher (BG).
Feeding Station:
1 GS Woodpecker, 5 Lesser Redpolls and a Willow Tit (GE)
GE's New Year's day list was 56 species for Chasewater only
Cuckoo Bank: Treecreeper in Eights wood (SB)
