8th The Rangers were using chain-saws nearby but the lack of wildfowl on the Swag was presumed to be more likely the recent firework bombardment. The Lagoon held 5 Mute Swans, 2 Mallard, 8 Teal, 212 Tufted Ducks, 47 Coot, 2 Moorhens, a Cormorant and a Great Crested Grebe. A quick scan of the north end of the lake only produced a further 28 Tufted Ducks and 4 Wigeon (GE). The calm conditions meant that the gulls were facing in all directions and many were asleep but around 12000 Black-headed Gulls were estimated and 2 (adult, 2cy) Yellow-legged Gulls were noted as well as an interesting 3cy large gull with a dark, blue-grey mantle, extensively fine-streaked head and ‘shawl’, dark bill with distinctive pale tip and black primaries with at least four small white tips. Better views are needed but 3cy Azorean Gull is a possibility (GE, CwS).
