The Mute Swans on the Slurry Pool have hatched 5 cygnets. Up to 10 small plovers were on the shore by the Balcony before being flushed (STa). The nesting Little Ringed Plovers continue to be constantly disturbed. In the short time I was safely observing from the cover of bushes they were firstly disturbed by wind-surfers then an elderly couple who were caring for the single parent Swan family inadvertently kept them off the nest and exposed it to the ever alert pair of Carrion Crows. 5 very noisy Oystercatchers, 3 Common Terns and 200 Swifts were also present (GE).

Yet more kindness towards the single parent swan family kept the Little Ringed Plovers off the nest. The sooner the pen has the courage to take her brood to the South Shore the better. She apparently laid 10 eggs, so during the course of the last couple of months she has lost her partner and 7 potential youngsters. Other swan news is that the Jeffrey's Swag pair lost all their eggs, the Plant Swag pair are down to 4 cygnets, now at the north end of the lake and the Fly Pool pair are onto their third nest of the season (GE, STa).

Please remember that once you've seen the schedule one breeding bird you must control your dog! Click on the photo to have a better chance of seeing it (GE).

2 Little Ringed Plovers and 2 Ringed Plovers were on the Balcony shore (GE) where the 3 Eels were again present (STa), 2 Common Terns were present but only 3 Tufted Ducks were on the Swag and only one Painted Lady was seen. A male Red-eyed Damselfly was on the canal between the spillway and the basin. This is only the 2nd record for Chasewater (GE).
A busy sunny summer Sunday with 80 people and 15 dogs along the shoreline at 12:30 being about typical. 3 Little Ringed Plovers on the Balcony shore were behaving as if nesting had failed and they were starting again. Results of the WeBS count will follow but 66 Mute Swans, 65 Canada Geese and 3 Common Terns were present (GE).
2-3 Buzzards were seen with one again perching on a lamp-post along the by-pass and using it to drop down into the long grass on the steep roadside (GE).

Part of the Fly Bay shore has been taped off to protect the area of rare Floating Water-plantain (Luronium natans). Well done to LDC, but its a pity the same couldn't have been done for the Little Ringed Plovers; the 'balcony' shore could so easily be taped/fenced off to provide one small area of undisturbed shoreline. Again there was no sign of any gull roost developing (GE).

An Oystercatcher, Green Woodpecker and 80 Swifts were also present along with 4 Meadow Browns, 4 Small Heaths, 1 Small and 3 Large Skippers, 2 Specked Woods and about 10 Common Blue Damselflies (EO). The moth trapping session on the Cranebrook Heath area of the Norton Bog site was enjoyable and quite productive and  a list will be added at a later date (GE).

Cloudy. Sunny evening
NW2
A big surprise this evening was the presence of 3 Little Terns on the Sailing Shore along with a Redshank, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, a Ringed Plover and 22 Black-headed Gulls, including 2 juveniles. At 21:20 the terns appeared quite settled and occasionally flew out over the lake and plunge dived for small fish (GE). They were not seen half an hour later but by this time a flock of well over 100 Black-headed Gulls had arrived amongst which was a juvenile Mediterranean Gull (IW). 2 Little Ringed Plovers were also on the Balcony shore and 2 Common Terns were over the west shore. Intriguing record of 2 Cranes, first seen at Rutland Water and then at Middleton and Belvide today; they must have passed over our area at at around 13:00 but was anyone looking? (GE).

The rain cleared just before dusk and a Curlew flew over to the west. A Shelduck, Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Terns, 25 Black-headed Gulls, a Lesser Black-back and 75 Canada Geese were also present but there was no sign of the good numbers of large gulls seen at Stubbers Green half an hour earlier. A Fox was tip-toeing along the North Shore (GE).
At 21:00 large numbers of large gulls flew from Stubbers Green towards the huge sand quarry beyond Swan Pool. 70 Lesser Black-backs remained on the Swag shore along with 200 Canada Geese and a further 70 large gulls were on the Highfields South landfill. It would seem that, unless they arrive after dark, they are not yet roosting at Chasewater (GE).
