The Turnstone was still present (PJ). 2 Short-eared Owls hunted over the North Shore during the afternoon. 304 Tufted Ducks were on the Swag and 144 on the Slurry Pool. Other totals were 21 Pochard, 6 Goosanders, 20+ Snipe, 3 Jack Snipe, 2 Stonechats, 35 Redwings, 15 Blackbirds, 25 Lesser Redpolls, 10 Siskins, 6 Goldfinches, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and a Buzzard. A total of 17 Red Deer, in two discrete groups, was present but only one mature stag was amongst them, no doubt as a result of the rather dubiously justified cull recently. Alleged damage to young trees is a nonsense, certainly at Chasewater since there is a desperate need for scrub clearance and heathland management and if its road casualty concerns that drive the cull then these can be reduced greatly by dog owners keeping their dogs on the lead. Today it was an uncontrolled 'Molly' that caused a group of 9 deer to panic and potentially become a road hazard (GE).

An adult Caspian Gull, the white Black-headed Gull and at least 118 Great Black-backed Gulls were in the roost (PJ).

A Short-eared Owl was also seen over No Man's Bank (IW).

An adult Caspian Gull was seen at Stubber's Green (RC).

After a very frosty night the Swag and Slurry Pool were frozen, resulting in a great deal of disturbance to the wildfowl when two ski boats came onto the water blasting out disco 'music' and many ducks appeared to leave the site. 7 Cormorants, 20+ Pochard, 7 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon and 3 Ruddy Ducks were amongst the disturbed flocks of Tufted, Goldeneye and 1-2 Goosanders. On the tiny patch of open water on the Swag there were 4 Gadwall and 8 Teal. The Turnstone was still on the Sailing Shore (GE, PW, NS), the adult Mediterranean Gull and adult Caspian Gull were in the roost and a Short-eared Owl and 2 Stonechats were on the North Shore (PJ, IW, N, JA, CM, JJH).

A Water Pipit was again reported from the South Shore (WMBC). 41 Cormorants and over 130 Lapwings were present until disturbed by ski boats. Other totals for the day included 25 Mute Swans, 23 Canada Geese (including the 6 hybrids), 29 Goosanders, 72 Goldeneye, 28 Pochard, 398 Tufted Ducks, 3 Ruddy Ducks, 179 Mallard, 11 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 4 Teal, 4 Herons, 23 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Little Grebes, 767 Coot, 13 Moorhens and a Kingfisher (NS, GE). Amongst the good sized gull roost was the 3rd w Caspian Gull, an adult Mediterranean Gull and the white Black-headed Gull (PJ, GE). The Short-eared Owl appeared over the North Shore at dusk (PW).

A Short-eared Owl and Green Woodpecker were seen on the North Shore (JH). As well as 2 (adult and 3rd w) Caspian Gulls there were 1894 adult Herring Gulls in the roost (IW).

On the Cuckoo Bank heathland there were 12 Snipe, 4 Stonechats, 7 Reed Buntings, 6 Meadow Pipits, Skylark, Lesser Redpoll and 4 Red Deer. On the fields there were 15 Grey Partridge, 27 Skylarks, 6 Meadow Pipits, a Stonechat, 4 Fieldfares and a flock of 10 Chaffinches, 2 Greenfinches and Reed Bunting feeding on a stubble field. Two Falconers were flying a Peregrine, after partridge no doubt. Later they were seen with an antennae tracking their lost Peregrine. Grey Partridge will not last long if these people hunt regularly (JH).

Rather quiet today with 2 Stonechats and up to 5 Red Deer on the North Shore. At the Feeding station there were 2 Willow Tits, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Green Woodpecker, several Reed Buntings and 8 Bullfinches. 38 Goosander and 14 Pochard on the Swag, 2 Gadwall on the Slurry Pool and 2 Wigeon, 3 Little Grebes and 35 Cormorants on the main lake. 100 Lapwings were  by the Waterski club (EO).
There was a smaller roost tonight with 850+ Herring, <300 Lesser Black-backs, <120 Great Black-backs, the white Black-headed Gull and the possible hybrid 4th w Herring x Caspian Gull (PJ).

At Stubbers Green nothing of note was seen in three hours of watching (PJ).

149 Lapwings were on the jetties (GE) and 67 Goldeneye were present. The 2nd w Caspian Gull or hybrid Herring x Caspian Gull and adult Yellow-legged Gull roosted, along with an adult Mediterranean Gull and white Black-headed Gull (PJ, IW, JA).
Lots of interest at Stubbers Green where there was an adult Yellow-legged Gull and the possible 4th w Herring x Caspian hybrid, and a probable 2nd w Caspian Gull or hybrid Herring x Caspian Gull (PJ, GE).

It is now clear that this is the same bird that was seen last weekend by KD, DSc and RSc and has generated quite an interesting discussion during the week, with most contributors (those who didn't see the bird) reckoning it to be a Herring Gull. However, the following features are good for Caspian Gull: small white head, sloping forehead and dark eye. The bill, although not the longest, thinnest, least gonys angled bill in the world, its shape, size, colour and pattern is the same as many other 'confirmed' Caspians and the gape-line starts below the eye. The leg length, especially the tibia was at times striking and its strutting gait was quite distinctive as it wandered through the gulls making sure they knew who was boss! The tone of grey was distinct from all other gulls present, very subtle but too pale for Yellow-legged, too dark for argenteus Herring and a fraction paler and more 'neutral' than argentatus Herring. The tertials were dark centred with no marginal barring. The shawl effect and general shape, with the long neck, protruding chest and bulge between the legs and vent are apparently also good features. Although not particularly shown by the photos, the bird was large and was only a little smaller than a 1st w Great Black-back that it stood next to. Certain features, however, do raise questions. The upper wing shows a rather advanced 2nd year plumage with large amount of grey in the lesser coverts yet the underwing shows a hint of markings on the coverts, more typical of Yellow-legged Gull and Herring Gull for this age and the rather loose tertials and shortish primary projection do not give the bird a particularly attenuated appearance. It has been shown that at least some of the UK's Caspian Gulls come from the Polish/East German population where hybridisation with Herring Gulls is frequent and features showing this mixed parentage often only become clear when the bird assumes near adult plumage. I think I'd better go and see the bird again! (GE).

On the Swag there were 66 Goldeneye, 11 Goosanders, 1 Ruddy Duck, 5 Gadwall and a Kingfisher and on the Slurry Pool there were another 10 Gadwall (GE). In the roost there was an adult Mediterranean Gull, an adult Yellow-legged Gull, the white Black-headed Gull and the bird photographed below (IW, N, JA, TP, PJ, GE).
Well the bird was seen again, very well, at Stubbers Green and in the Chasewater roost. The underwing did prove to be marked with brown spots on the coverts and the tertials always looked loose but the legs continued to look long, thin and a pale milky pink and it contrasted hugely from all other 2nd and 3rd w Herring Gulls. The general informed consensus is that the bird definitely has 'cachinnans in there'  but is possibly a Herring x Caspian Gull hybrid from the Polish/East German population with perhaps the most significant indicators being at both ends of the bird: the rather short primary projection and the rather domed head and heavy bill with obvious gonys angle. These features, however, could still fall within the limits of pure Caspian Gull. Thanks to Alan Dean and Dick Newell for giving their expert supporting advice (PJ, GE). For ease of recording we will refer to this and other slightly 'off' Caspians as Caspian. Photos © G Evans

148 Lapwings were on the jetty and 3 Gadwall, 17 Pochard and a Little Grebe were on the Swag (GE). A Short-eared Owl was seen and 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls were in the roost (PJ, JA, IW).
There was no sign of the possible hybrid gull today at Stubbers Green but there was an adult Mediterranean Gull (later seen in the roost) amongst the Black-headed Gulls (PJ, GE).

15 Redwings with 1 Goldfinch on the south shore, 16 Goosander, 4 Gadwall, a Stonechat and 42 Snipe came up in 3 flocks about 200 yds ahead of me but I couldn't see what had disturbed them (EO).
236 Lapwings were present (GE) and the 3rd w Caspian Gull joined an adult Mediterranean Gull in the roost at 15:30 (PJ, IW).
At Stubbers Green it was the turn of the 3rd w Caspian Gull to put in an appearance (PJ, GE).

Not seen since the 18th, the 3rd w Caspian Gull showed well and it contrasted well, apart from its white head, with the Herring Gulls on the water with its flat back, low profile and small head (distance from forehead to nape being one quarter of total body length in Herring but closer to one fifth in Caspian Gull (GE).

On the Swag there were 60 Goldeneye and 19 Pochard (GE), a total of 23 Goosanders was counted (PJ) and 10 Gadwall were on the Slurry Pool (GR). The Short-eared Owl was hunting over the North Shore heath at dusk but of concern was the presence of a man carrying an Eagle Owl along the cycle path. Let's hope he wasn't trying to fly the bird since it could easily kill a Short-eared Owl (GE, NS). The gull roost was badly disturbed by ski boat P71 using every possible part of the lake and staying out till 16:20, long after the recall light had come on. An adult Mediterranean Gull and over 10 000 Black-headed Gulls were present including the white bird (PJ).

A flock of around 40 Waxwings briefly settled in trees near the Innovation Centre at around 15:20 (MG). The drake Smew and Short-eared Owl were also present, a Treecreeper was in the willows along the Sailing Shore and other sightings included 62 Canada Geese (including the 6 hybrids), Willow Tit, 20 Long-tailed Tits, 20 Redwings and 2 Pheasants (GE). A Stonechat and Green Woodpecker were on the North Shore (FC). An adult Mediterranean Gull was on the Swag (GW) and the good sized roost held 4 (3 adult, 1 3rd w) Yellow-legged Gulls (PJ, GE, MG).
At Stubbers Green there were 2 Buzzards (one with the orangey tail) and 400+ large gulls but the bulk of gulls lingered around the adjacent Vigo/Utopia Landfill where there was an adult Yellow-legged Gull and 1500+ Herring Gulls (PJ, GE).

Great efforts were made to find Waxwings in the area but to no avail. Instead, two lucky observers were found by the Waxwings whilst they were respectively photographing Red Deer and looking at the gull roost! Firstly, at midday three flocks of Waxwings totaling 60 birds flew north over Anglesey Basin (NS) and 74+ flew north over the lake at 14:55 (PJ). Its obviously impossible to say whether these flocks involved the same birds. A Kingfisher, the drake Smew, adult Mediterranean Gull were present during the day and in the roost there was a 3rd w Yellow-legged Gull, <1000 Herring Gulls, 150+ Great Black-backs, 300+ Lesser Black-backs, 11500 Black-headed Gulls and a few Common Gulls. The freezing temperatures at dusk caused the gulls to roost tightly packed in a line sheltering from the easterly breeze along the length of the dam and the sailing shore to just beyond Target Point, a distance of 1 km.
In Highfield Farm there were 10 Yellowhammers, 20 Goldfinches, 10 Greenfinches, several Redwings and 11 redpolls that were only seen in flight (GE).
At Stubbers Green/Vigo Tip large numbers of gulls were present but nothing of note was seen. The orange tailed Buzzard and 4 Snipe were present (GE, PJ).

Thick morning fog only slightly lifted during the day but Paul's perseverance paid off when he located the Waxwing flock near the Pear Tree Cottage pub in Brownhills West. The flock of 93 birds was very mobile but showed a preference for the guelder rose type berries on the M6 Toll embankment adjacent to the Hednesford Road bridge. The flock settled for a while on the bush in the Chasewater Railway (Staffs) but spent most of the time in the West Midlands until they disappeared into the gloom of Chasewater's west shore at 15:47 (PJ et al).
