Monday
31 July

After my first weekend away for months it was a great shock to find the huge area of burnt heathland on the north shore. Although not directly affected by the fire the Stonechats could not be found. 2 Kestrels and a Buzzard were hunting over the burnt area and a Sparrowhawk caused panic in a small flock of Sand Martins near the Swag as it carried off one of the flock towards Crane Brook (GE).

North Bog: 16 flowering Round-leaved Wintergreens at the original site but a further 20 in the sphagnum area and at least as many again non-flowering plants.

Swag: 70 Tufted Ducks, 1 drake Ruddy.

Lake: 4 Herons, 9 Common Terns.

22:00 Several Daubenton’s and Pipistrelle type bats were flying around the dam (GE).

Saturday
29 July

A huge fire was deliberately set alight on the north shore heath at around 14:00 resulting in many fire fighters and seven fire appliances working many hours to get it under control. 2 Common Snipe were seen flying from the fire and creatures such as Toads making a less successful escape. This is the most damaging fire since the devastating fires during the 1976 drought. What appeared to be perfect Dartford Warbler habitat has been totally destroyed and will take several years to recover.
